Conference Outline

  • “Diversity in Education: The Challenges to Success
  • 9:00am to 10:15am
  • It is essential that all of children have the same opportunity to be successful and achieve their dreams in South Carolina. In order to do that education must provide the same high-quality education, regardless of socio-economic status or ethnic background. From K-12, to our technical college network, to our institutions of higher education, we must accomplish this level playing field. How do we get there?

Professional Development

  • “This is how I got where I’m at”
  • 10:30am to 11:45am
  • We all start somewhere and our paths are often unique and different. There are some core ingredients that allow for success though. In this session, we’ll learn what those are from those who have climbed the mountain.

Historic Luncheon

  • 12:15pm to 1:45pm
  • 50th Anniversary of the Columbia Urban League, or 100th?
  • 70th Anniversary of Elmore v. Rice

Young, Gifted & Black

  • “Success of Black Entrepreneurship”
  • 2:00pm to 3:15pm
  • We hear over and over that small businesses are the backbone of our country. However, in communities we struggle to see minority enterprises truly grow and achieve the level of success of their counterparts. Why is this? How do we support them? What are your tips for tackling that entrepreneurial bug?

Political Awareness

  • “What you need to know going on around you”
  • 3:30pm to 4:45pm
  • 2016 is over! Good riddance! Now that 2016 is over, we will discuss what needs to happen in 2017 by discussing major issues that were prevalent in 2017. What do we need to know about law enforcement and its interactions with folks of color? Trump! What do we need to know and how do we govern ourselves moving forward?
